It was announced today that Rebekah and Joel have made the U.S. Figure Skating Developmental Team!
This is the Schneider-Farris Family's Blog. Keep up with what we are doing by logging into this site regularly! (The reason this site is called "Tragedy and Triumph" is that when I first founded this site, my husband, Dan, had been in a horrible accident, and he recovered. His recovery was a miracle! Go back to the 2005 archives to read our story.)

Rebekah and Joel Are in Lake Placid Without Mom and Dad!
Rebekah and Joel have gone on a three week adventure. They've gone off to Lake Placid, New York, for three weeks. They went with their ice dance coach, Tiffany Hyden-Dombeck. Tiffany has rented a house, and four of her ice dance teams (including Rebekah and Joel) will be training in Lake Placid until August 15.
All the skaters will be competing in the Lake Placid Ice Dance Championships next week.
Yesterday, our family woke up at 2:00 AM to get Rebekah and Joel to the Denver Airport to catch a 6:30 AM flight. I spent the rest of the day recovering!
The kids have sent me text messages and text message photos to keep in touch. Joel may try a new food (his list of food he likes is very small). I heard from Rebekah that he tried a hamburger yesterday....
The photos below are two photos Joel and Rebekah sent us from their phones during their travels and the others ones are when we said good-bye at the airport.
I miss them, but texting makes keeping in touch more fun!

I Was Scammed Today
I feel so stupid. This morning I got up early to do some professional writing. I opened my email and then I opened Facebook. After doing the "fun stuff," I planned to get to work.
A sweet person I know who is in my Facebook account popped up in the chat window. She said she had a financial emergency. She'd been mugged while on vacation in London and needed to borrow money to get back to the U.S.
I told her I had no extra funds, but would do everything I could do to help. I began writing announcements and blog posts announcing her emergency. I even called a person I knew who lived in London who I thought could help her.
It took about 3 hours!
Then I wrote the email address she gave me as contact info (she said her cell phone was stolen and to contact her via email) to let her know of what I'd done to help.
She wrote me in response to that email and told me it WAS A SCAM! She didn't need any money! Someone had broken into her Facebook and email accounts and had contacted all her friends!
I wasted 3 good hours on a Sunday!
I feel very violated. I was talking to a total stranger in a Facebook chat window who was pretending to be someone I knew!
No more live chats for me!

Good-Bye, Drew (Schneider) Saint Marie
My sister Lynnellen's son, Drew, is leaving the nest. He left today to teach sailing in the Bahamas.
My dad wrote a translation from Hamlet to send him off:
My dad's translation is in bold and in italics.
Hamlet Act 1 Scene 3
LORD POLONIUS
Yet here, Laertes! aboard, aboard, for shame!
The wind sits in the shoulder of your sail,
And you are stay'd for. There; my blessing with thee!
It’s time to leave, and here is my blessing.
And these few precepts in thy memory
Here’s a few things that I’d like to suggest to you, and they may help you in life.
See thou character. Give thy thoughts no tongue.
Don’t tell everybody everything that comes into your head. Hold back a little bit.
Nor any unproportioned thought his act.
Don’t jump and do something extravagant before you’ve thought about it.
Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar.
Be friendly and warm, but keep your dignity.
Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried,
Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel;
But do not dull thy palm with entertainment
Of each new-hatch'd, unfledged comrade.
The friends that you have had and know very well. Keep them close to you. They are a wonderful asset. However, don’t just take anyone as a new friend until you really get to know about him or her.
Beware of entrance to a quarrel, but being in,
Bear't that the opposed may beware of thee.
Try not to get into quarrels if you can avoid them. However, if you have to get into a quarrel, do it in a way that you stand up for yourself when necessary. The people on the other side should know not to fool around with you.
Give every man thy ear, but few thy voice;
Listen caarefullyy to others when they speak, but don’t be too free with what you say to others. Think out your opinions before you speak of them.
Take each man's censure, but reserve thy judgment.
Observe people, but hold off on judging them until you know the whole story.
Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy,
But not express'd in fancy; rich, not gaudy;
For the apparel oft proclaims the man,
And they in France of the best rank and station
Are of a most select and generous chief in that.
Wear the best clothes that you can afford, but don’t be ostentatious. People will judge you by how you dress. Also, the people in special places like where you are going may be used to judging people by how they dress and wear their hair, etc.
Neither a borrower nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.
Don’t borrow or lend things. It just leads to trouble and loss of friendships. This is a very famous line.
This above all: to thine ownself be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.
(This is another very famous line, perhaps the most famous of all. ) If you are honest and true to yourself, then everything else will follow. If you do that with your self, then you’ll be the same when you deal with other people. In other words, don’t be tempted to do things that you know are wrong even if it leads to personal disadvantage. (I can think of many famous examples in history that exemplify this. You might want to read about Sir Thomas More who faced death rather than give up his principles. This is the subject matter or the movie “A Man for All Seasons.”)
Farewell: my blessing season this in thee!
Goodbye. My blessings go with you.

Figure Skating Pair and Dance Tests Passed 7-11-09
Well, our family made it through another test session! Annabelle passed her Juvenile pair test and Rebekah and Joel passed their Intermediate Free Dance. They did the skating, but I'm the one who is exhausted. Tonight, Ryan Jahnke, commented that I looked like a "nervous mother" and I WAS!

Patch Session Video 7-10-09
Here's another patch session that took place in Colorado Springs during the summer of 2009.
Note: Rachael Flatt was on the waiting list for this one, but didn't come since she wasn't guaranteed a spot. It would have been so neat to see her "doing patch!"
My own kids had a good time, even though they really don't understand what it is about. I'm glad they got at least some experience "doing patch" this summer!

Funny Passover Song
I just stumbled on this very funny Passover song. Even though Passover is in the spring, I couldn't resist sharing this!

4th of July 2009 - Fireworks in Castle Rock, Colorado
We found the Castle Rock fireworks by accident. My memory card ran out of space or I would have taken more videos. Here's the beginning of the show.

Annabelle Gets to Be an Acrobat at the Colorado Renaissance Festival 7-4-09
Annabelle Schneider-Farris was picked out of the audience to volunteer in the Acrobatic Act at the 2009 Colorado Renaissance Festival. Annabelle says that all her pair skating experience made twirling around very fun and easy!
July 4th Weekend 2009
We have had a great holiday weekend so far.
We arrived at the Schneider family vacation home Thursday night and woke up Friday morning to a beautiful sunny day. We spent most of Friday afternoon at the town of Larkspur's community July 3rd celebration at Larkspur Community Park. We took part in an afternoon of games and of course, the kids won prizes. One highlight of the celebration was that real live elephants from the Colorado Renaissance Festival came to the gathering! Annabelle took part in the Watermelon Eating Contest! Everyone sampled the free ice cream.
On Friday evening, we had a great Shabbat dinner with my parents. That was so special.
Then, the 4th of July holiday came!
We spent the day at the Colorado Renaissance Festival. Annabelle got picked as a volunteer in the Acrobat show. Little did they know they chose a "little pair skater" to spin around in the air! She did great.
It was fun to spend the day at the Renaissance Festival with our friends Sam, Hellene, and Jeff Anderson.
After it began to rain, we left the festival and headed to the Larkspur house for a great 4th of July meal that included hamburgers and hot dogs, corn on the cob, beans, salad, and a bunch of other goodies.
It was so wet outside that we wondered if outdoor fireworks would happen, but we decided to try to find a good show. Little did we know, when we headed for Castle Rock, that we were in store for "THE BEST!" We saw people, chairs, and cars lined up somewhere in "The Meadows," so we parked our car and put our chairs on a street corner and got out the blankets and waited. WOW is the only word to describe what we saw! We sang patriotic songs as we saw the most beautiful fireworks. The kids especially enjoyed shouting "Boom!" trying to coordinate with each firework that went off!
As we drove back to the Schneider family vacation home, the girls fell asleep! What a day!

Car Accident - My Parents Are OKAY!
On Monday, 6-29-09, my parents went to my brother Billy's son Charlie's baseball game in Denver. The game ended late due to rain. On their way home, while they were still on the freeway, and almost to Castle Rock, all of a sudden, out of the blue, they found a car crashing into their windshield! .
Fortunatelly, everyone is okay. Their car needs work, but will be okay too.
They spent the night at the Comfort Inn in Castle Rock. The next morning, they ate breakfast at the hotel, took the car to a body shop, and then got a ride back to the Larkspur house.
The car will be fixed in about 10 days, so they are "officially on vacation" until then.
I'm so grateful that they are OK!
