Loud and Proud Open Mike at Poor Richard’s 11-23-2022

As everyone knows, there was a horrible shooting in Colorado Springs on Saturday 11/19/2022 that killed five people and injured 18 others.  This happened at a gay club in Colorado Springs.

Poor Richard’s Restaurant and Rico’s Wine Bar held an open mike night on Thanksgiving Eve supporting the gay community in our city.

When I heard about this event, I knew I had to be there because Poor Richard’s and Richard Skorman have supported diversity in Colorado Springs since 1977 and I’d been going to Poor Richard’s since 1977.

Before Richard shared on the Open Mike, my son Joel and I got a chance to speak with him for quite a bit.  He thought we’d only been going to his restaurant for 30 years and I told him it was way longer.  I told him how much I appreciated him and all he had done for our city.  I told him how my children had literally grown up at his restaurant and how much we all enjoyed going there.  I thanked him for giving us a place where we’d comfortably be able to eat out with my three “wild” children.  I thanked him for the time he cleaned up after my late father when my father spilled some food.

What a kind and incredible man Richard Skorman is and I’m so glad he has been a force who speaks out in Colorado Springs.

Several people shared their music at this open mike event, but when Richard got up and told about the history of his restaurant and his experience with supporting the gay community, I just became overwhelmed with so much emotion since what he shared seemed to parallel my own life. So…I decided….spur of the moment to go up and share too!

There was a woman named Carolyn Cathey who also shared a powerful story and then spoke again giving those present so much strength.

One young woman named Svetlana worked at the gay club where the attack took place and also shared.

It was such an emotional evening.  Carolyn Cathey gave a very inspirational closing message and everyone chanted with her “Together we will get through this!”

Thank you Richard Skorman and Poor Richard’s for supporting diversity and supporting every person that needs support in Colorado Springs!  Just being there last night made me proud to be part of this community for so many years.
