This is the Schneider-Farris Family's Blog. Keep up with what we are doing by logging into this site regularly! (The reason this site is called "Tragedy and Triumph" is that when I first founded this site, my husband, Dan, had been in a horrible accident, and he recovered. His recovery was a miracle! Rebekah and Joel Still In Lake Placid, But Rebekah Broke Her Foot

Rebekah and Joel are in Lake Placid, New York without Mom and Dad. Things were going smoothly until...

Last Saturday evening, Rebekah was playing at the park with Tiffany's ice dance teams. The way she described it was that there was a hill and the kids were playing a game called Sharks and Minnows. Rebekah tripped and fell on the hill and rolled her ankle.

Then next thing she knew, she could not walk or put weight on her foot. The boys piggy backed rode her back to the house the kids are staying at.

On Sunday morning, I got a call from Tiffany asking for medical insurance information. Rebekah went to the hospital emergency room. X-rays were taken and the doctor on call called Jo Ann on Sunday afternoon with bad news: Rebekah had a fracture.

Joel and Rebekah were supposed to compete in the 2009 Lake Placid Ice Dance Championships, so hearing this news was very upsetting.

World Figure Skating Champion and Olympic Bronze Medalist, Debi Thomas, is on Jo Ann's Facebook friends account. Debi became an orthopedic surgeon. When she heard about Rebekah's injury, she asked to see the xrays.

We were able to email Debi the xrays. Debi also spoke with Rebekah on the phone. We learned that this is not a severe injury in spite of the fracture. The fracture is stable.

Rebekah is now on crutches and keeping weight off of her injured foot, and Rebekah and Joel are in Lake Placid watching the Ice Dance Championships this weekend, but are unable to compete.

Our entire family is sad about having to withdraw from the event and we also wonder when Rebekah will be able to return to the ice. Debi Thomas and my father (both are physicians) tell us that usually an injury like this takes 6 to 8 weeks to heal. Hopefully, the children will catch up and will get to skate in the Pikes Peak Classic and Midwesterns.

Their plane doesn't return to Colorado Springs until August 16. Tiffany's students were planning another week in Lake Placid having some fun and doing some skating. Rebekah won't be able to skate, but may be able to swim and play.

She has an appointment with a Colorado Springs orthopedic specialist on August 17, as soon as she returns to the Springs.

Below are Rebekah's xrays!
